Breaking into Tesco, the Five show which followed 20 amateur chefs as they battled
to have their product sold on the supermarket's shelves, last night announced Nick Smallwood’s ‘Soup in a Bun’ the winner.

Launching in 155 Tesco stores from today, the winning product is a Thai spiced
butternut squash soup, served in a roll that needs to be baked and hollowed out. Presented by TV chef Simon Rimmer and screened over six weeks, the series
Illustrated the lengthy process market leader Tesco goes through when evaluating
new products to sell in its stores.

Richard Brasher, commercial and UK marketing director at Tesco, said: “This is the first time we have opened our doors in this way and it has proved to be an exciting experiment for us as well as the amateur cooks. I think very few people realise how much work goes into developing a product for the supermarket shelf.”

The ‘Soup in a Bun’ idea competed against ready made Quinoa salad, a hog and
apple pie, a Yorkshire cheesecake and a Malaysian noodle soup.

The packaging for the winning product has been designed by branding design
consultancy Pemberton & Whitefoord (P&W).

Last night, the show received one million viewers, a 4.4 percent share.
